Porta del Mare is a major urban regeneration intervention in the city of Salerno. This urban regeneration project has replaced the derelict area of the Marzotto textile industrial settlement, giving rise to a new residential and commercial complex among the largest ever built in Southern Italy.
Overlooking the coastline, at the motorway exit and on the main artery running through the provincial capital of Salerno, Porta del Mare represents the new eastern gateway to the city.
An ambitious project that necessarily required the use of an innovative construction solution, such as MTR® System, guaranteeing construction speed and high structural performance, along with all the other benefits and advantages of light prefabrication.
A project of impressive scale
Three residential tower buildings, a structure used as a restaurant, a shopping centre, an underground car park and a public park acting as a hub between the residential and commercial zones. All developed over a total area of 44,000 sq m.
The towers are arranged and oriented in a “fan” layout and the height of the buildings follows a decreasing pattern towards the sea: 20, 19, 17 floors overlooking the Gulf of Salerno.
The design of the layout of the 183 residential units was developed with the intention of ensuring great architectural freedom for a completely open-plan division of interior spaces.
Each individual tower also features a different volumetric development, determined by the stacking of various apartment types and the alternation of different terraces.
MTR® System: the answer to the most complex construction and structural requirements
MTR® System made it possible to meet the various construction and structural requirements of this complex project.
Thanks to the use of self-supporting MTR® A beams, it was possible to achieve wider structural grids of up to 7 metres and reduced column cross-sections for greater architectural freedom and versatile space planning, with the aim of realising the various housing typologies.
Furthermore, all downstand beams were completely eliminated, designing flush-with-slab beams for every floor level.
All of this was carried out with extreme speed and ease of installation of the horizontal structures.
In particular, the construction of the three tower buildings required site safety for work at height.
MTR® beams, manufactured in the plant, arrive ready for the installation phase, eliminating the risks and complexities associated with the assembly, at great heights, of traditional reinforced concrete beam reinforcement.
These are the main advantages brought by MTR® System to the project, but they were not the only ones.
Choosing MTR® System as a construction solution means adopting a sustainable building system compliant with the CAM Edilizia (Minimum Environmental Criteria for Construction), as it is manufactured with up to 92% recycled steel (as certified by the “ReMade in Italy” certification).
One system, many advantages: MTR® System technology represents an innovation for the construction sector, which is increasingly moving towards construction industrialisation and off-site building to address the various design and construction complexities.
