The MTR® System for the Construction of a Large-Scale Residential Complex

In via Amendola, in Bari, construction is nearing completion on one of the largest prestigious residential complexes built in Bari in recent years. It is called AbiParco and will become the new gathering place of the city, a green lung just a stone’s throw from the centre. Metal.Ri handled the structural calculations and the supply of MTR® beams for the entire complex.

A residential building designed to achieve a high level of comfort and minimal environmental impact, where winter heating, summer cooling, and the production of domestic hot water take place with minimum energy expenditure, harnessing solar energy. A residential complex consisting of 5 stairwells with 142 housing units of various sizes, 13 floors, and 18 types of apartments.

Project figures

  • 18 apartment types
  • 13 floors above ground level
  • 3 underground floors used as garages
  • 142 housing units

“We used the MTR® System for our construction site in via Amendola in Bari because, due to the considerable height of the building, the combined effect of seismic action and wind forced us to have very large dropped beams all around the perimeter, which would have created problems with the roller-shutter housing boxes and therefore with the height of the window frames.”

The advantages of the MTR® System: flush-slab beams and speed of execution

“With the MTR® System we were able to solve the problem excellently, constructing on all floors beams flush with the floor slab. The other great advantage was the speed of execution of the floors, which is particularly important for a building with vertical development.” – states Eng. Locorotondo.

In addition to speed, it is important to highlight the organisation that prefabrication allows on a construction site. Light prefabrication such as MTR® beams, combined with prefabricated floor slabs already widely used, completes the horizontal structure 100%. The MTR® System, a composite steel-concrete system, integrated into a traditional reinforced concrete system, improves structural performance and site organisation. The prefabricated elements arrive directly at the construction site, ready for installation, without requiring additional processing.

For this residential project, MTR® T beams were chosen, the ideal solution for buildings of this type. The MTR® T beam is not self-supporting and must be propped on formwork or on a predalles slab. With MTR® T beams it is possible to construct flush-slab beams where ordinary reinforced concrete does not allow it, as also highlighted by the engineer from Gruppo Fanelli.

“I am satisfied with the technical support received from the Metal.Ri designers and I evaluate their work positively.”

The underground parking floors were constructed with MTR® T beams on predalles slabs to guarantee the project’s R120 rating, with large structural grids within the floor slab package. A result unachievable with a conventional reinforced concrete structure.

“The prefabrication of the lattice beam saved us time during the execution phase of beam rebar assembly, using fewer props and formwork, for greater eco-sustainability of the construction site. And for these reasons, I would recommend the use of the MTR® System to a colleague.

Engineer Locorotondo’s positive assessment continues: “For construction sites similar to the one in via Amendola in Bari, or for sites where the use of beams of unusual spans might be required, I would always adopt the MTR® technology. I am satisfied with the technical support received from the Metal.Ri designers and I evaluate their work positively.”

Metal.Ri is the reference point for such complex and significant projects, which require engineering expertise, artisanal care, certified quality, and reliability: qualities that have distinguished us for over 30 years in the world of structural design.

We once again thank Engineer Locorotondo and Gruppo Fanelli for the trust they have placed in us and for the time they dedicated to this brief interview, with the aim of continuously improving our company’s work and steering the construction world towards a 4.0 jobsite: an advanced construction site with the use of the MTR® System.
